About the Nanda Devi East Base Camp Trek:
- The journey starts with your arrival in Kathgodam, from where you will drive towards Munsiyari. After a night in the guesthouse there, you will trek to Lilam the next day. Spend a day in the tents here.
- Feel the trans-Himalayan trekking experience as you trek through Bogudiar, Rilkot, and Ghanghar before trekking to the Pachu Glacier with overnight stays in tents every night.
- From Pachu Glacier, you will explore the base camp for a day, before starting the return trek the next day. You will trek to Martoli, Rargari, and Munsiyari, staying at every location for a night.

One of the most beautiful peaks in the Himalayas, the mountain is of significant importance to the locals. Leading from an ancient trade route that was once home to a large civilization, the trek takes you to the base camp of Nanda Devi.

After your arrival in Kathgodam, you will be taken on a drive through the hills of Kumaon to reach Munsiyari.
The destination for the day is Chaukori, which is famous for its tea gardens and iconic views of the Himalayas.

The trekking begins after breakfast with the easy trek from Munsiyari to Lilam, which is a small village and winter residence of the inhabitants of Milam Village.

After breakfast this morning, you will be trekking through forests of Utees trees. This forest is where the small rivulets of Ralam and Gori Ganga meet.
Following the way, you will arrive at a point where the Gori Ganga is met by the river Poting, marking the village of Bogudiyar.

The beginning of the true Trans-Himalayan terrain and trekking experience is from this point on. After breakfast, you will start the trek to Rilkot.
There will be a short diversion on the way to the Laspa Village to visit the Northern Nanda Kot Glacier.
Keeping on the trek, you will arrive at the village of Rilkot, where you can set up camp by the river.

After breakfast, the trek leads out of Rilkot, and just after a short distance, you can see the view of Martoli Peak.
You can see the terrain opening up to reveal true forms of Trans-Himalayan landscape.
You will walk through meadows to finally arrive at the village of Ghanghar. This village marks the beginning of the Pachu Valley, which eventually leads to the base camp of Nanda Devi.
Explore the local houses with ancient wood carvings. Also visit the ancient temple of the region.

After breakfast this morning, the steep climb to Pachu Glacier will begin.
As you walk past the forests of Rhodendron, the peak seems to be looming closer with each step you take.
After trekking for about 5 hours and covering 7 kms, you will arrive at the Pachu Glacier on the northern face of Nanda Devi.

The morning will see you waking up to a mesmerizing sunrise. You will then have your breakfast.
The day is for walking up on the glacier, so you can get a closer view of the beautiful peak.

During the total of 9 days of trekking and 2 days for transportation, our entire group enjoyed a lot. Luckily, most of our group members were from hilly region and we were able to get acclimatised to the climate easily. Keeping all these aside, the trek was truly and purely an enthralling experience for us!

As I happen to see the Nanda Devi peak, I felt the sudden rush of excitement and adrenalines in me. It was a moment of a lifetime. All the climbs and descends got rewarded with the prized views all around.
This Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek falls into the difficult category of Himalayan treks, and demands optimum fitness levels. Start preparing for the trek at least 3 months in advance. To increase your cardiovascular endurance and stamina, begin jogging everyday for 5 km.
You should be able to jog 5 km within 25 minutes to be called fit for this trek. Add a regime of 3 sets of squats with 15 reps per set to strengthen your knees. Do some yoga asanas and stretches to avoid muscle cramps during the trek.
The Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek is best attempted in the summer months of May to June, and post monsoon months of September to October. The trek should be avoided during monsoons, for there is high possibility of landslides.
The trails are also a lot more slippery during monsoons. The period from October to May sees a lot of snowfall, and the trek shuts down temporarily until the summers, when the snow begins to melt, and the trail is a lot clearer.
Here is the list of things to carry before going to Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek:
- A 60L backpack with proper back support.
- Headgear: Beanie, Balaclava / Monkey Cap, Neck Scarf, UV Protect Sunglasses, Head Torch (Optional if carrying regular torch)
- Layers: Thermals, Fleece Jacket, Down Feather Jacket, Cotton and Woollen socks, T-shirts, Trekking Pants.
- Besides the above, carry a trekking pole, torch, a personal medical kit, toiletries, and energy bars.
