Best Time to travel to Everest Base Camp Trek
Travelling to Mount Everest has its on-peak and off-peak seasons. For ordinary tourists, the golden season to take a Mt. Everest tour would be in April, May, early-June, September and October, and early November. At these times of the year, the skies are clearer, with very few days where visibility is even slightly limited.
There are very little rain and snow, and daytime temperatures, while not the hottest in the year, are well above freezing, and quite comfortable for trekking and touring the region. Although, you will still need some warm clothes for the nights, which can still get quite cold.
However, tours to Mount Everest can be arranged at any time of year, given an individuals’ unique preference. As long as you are not a professional mountaineer with a particular time frame to summit the mountain, Everest Base Camp welcomes you whenever you come.
Tips for Everest Base Camp
1) Bring enough money: There are no ATMs in Lukla, so one is advised to carry enough money with them in case of need for an emergency. And even for buying trekking equipments in Kathmandu. It is one of the best and cheapest place to buy the same.
2) Bring your own Tea: Yes, tea is very expensive at the Everest. But getting hot water won’t cost you much. Carry your own tea bags to be used while on the trek.
3) Mentally prepare yourself: As this is not an easy trek, you should prepare yourself mentally for the task that is ahead of you. This means, be prepared for extreme weather conditions, All accommodation on the trek to Everest Base Camp is in small tea houses, run by the local Sherpa people or Mountain Lodges. There are options for showers lower down on the trail, if you decide to use them, however, many people keep clean by using baby wipes and a bowl of warm water each day. The toilet situations can be difficult at times, as in the tea houses they are generally not Western-style toilets, rather just a hole in the ground instead of a toilet bowl.
4) What to Carry: Warm clothes, sunglasses, trekking boots, gloves, trekking stick, woollen caps among other trekking equipments you want to carry. However, the most important thing to bring is a good pair of trekking shoes that you have hiked in previously. Kathmandu is a great place to buy trekking clothes that are both cheap and of decent quality. If you can bring your own sleeping bag otherwise you can rent one for about 500-600 rupees a day.
5) Prepare for extreme weather: If it’s sunny you might be surprised at how warm it can get during the day. Most trekkers wear t-shirts and shorts for the first few days while the elevation is still low. When the sun sets the temperatures to drop quick. Wear a warm hat while sleeping and take a Nalgene bottle filled with hot water and keep it in your sleeping bag to stay warm.
6) Stay Hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of water while on the trek. Do carry extra water bottles with you at all times.
7) Altitude Headaches: A headache can be one of the first signs of altitude problems. Do carry suitable medications for the same. Small headaches are common and should not stop you from trekking or worry you. However, if it persists or increases, it might be advisable to ascend or even trek down.
8) Avoid the Sun: Taking care of your skin and eyes are important. Sunburns happen much quicker at high elevation so make sure to apply sunscreen a few times a day and wear a hat. Sunglasses are a must-have and if you wear prescription glasses it’s good to come to Nepal with a pair of prescription sunglasses or at least clip-on.
9) Dress in Layers: Layering allows you to easily regulate your body temperature and stay comfortable while trekking. It’s even better if your layers have zippers so that you have even more control of your body temperature.
10) Bring a camera: This trek is one of the most beautiful Himalayan Treks. So much so, that one would want to stop at every step and take pictures to make memories for life.
11) Bring Extra Batteries/Charging Packs: In the cold, your batteries will die much quicker than they do at home. This holds true for basically every kind of electronics you'll be using from phones to cameras to kindles. While some of the tea houses allow you to charge things, they all charge you for it (some more than others). An easy way to avoid this is to bring spare batteries and a portable charger.
The first day of your itinerary involves arrival in Kathmandu and getting prepared for the upcoming trek. You will be picked up at the Kathmandu airport, introduced to the guide and will also be briefed about the trek.
The guide will make sure that your equipment is in place and might recommend any gear that needs to be purchased or rented.
After breakfast, we will proceed to the Tribhuvan Domestic Airport, Kathmandu.
We will take a flight to Lukla. The total flying time is of 35 minutes. The experience of flying in this route will be one of your best. The flight will be passing through valleys and presenting some breathtaking views of the mountain ranges and the Nepali villages atop.
Once you arrive in Lukla, our representatives will receive you.
Immediately we will start our trekking and trek to Phakding. It is at an altitude level of 2652m. It is a simple trek for 3.5 hours. The trail will pass via many small villages and green mountains. We will stay overnight at the Tea house.
Today we will trek for Namche Bazaar. Namche is at an altitude level of 3440m. The route is surrounded by huge green mountain ranges. The Dudh Koshi river flows along the side till Namche.
We will stop at Monjo for the lunch, as that is the last point to get food before Namche. The route between Monjo and Namche is a gradually inclining trail amidst thick green forest. You will be able to get a glimpse of Everest and Lhotse just before Namche, though not very clear.
Overnight stay at Tea House or Mountain Lodge. Total trekking will be 5 to 6 hours with the moderate difficulty level and a portion after Monjo will be strenuous.
This is a day for acclimatization and we will be resting in Namche Bazaar. It is a place that has everything one can wish for. Coffee shops, Bars, Restaurants and many more things to do.
You can go to the Namche museum, this a little above Namche Bazaar, just about 20 minutes trek. You can get a clear view of Everest and Lhotse from this place.
You can visit the Namche Bazaar (Market) and Namche Monastery.
Tengboche is a small valley at an altitude level of 3860m. It is one of the most beautiful places of our entire trekking route.
The Tengboche Monastery is a famous and beautiful place, worth visiting.
The trek time will be about 5 hours with moderate difficulty level.
Today we will start our trek and go towards the Pangboche village, we will get some nice views of Mount Ama Dablam.
We are likely to have our lunch at Pangboche. We will then trek towards Pheriche and proceed to the Imja Valley.
We will be able to see the Lobuche River and will pass through it and take steep hike to Dingboche.
Overnight stay at Dingboche.
The trek will be about 6 to 7 hours while it will be moderate for most part, there will be about 2 steep inclines.
Today will be an acclimatization day.
We can take a small hike to get a view of worlds three top mountain peaks, Mount Lhotse, Mount Makalu and Mount Cho Yu. Besides these, you will see plenty of peaks and mountain ranges.
Overnight stay at hotel.
Today's trek to Dughla (4, 620m) will be our shortest trek in this trip. The distance between Dingboche and Dughla is less in comparison to rest of the days. The flat trail till Dughla will offer some of the best views of this trekking expedition. On our right, we can see a magnificent view of mount Pumori (7, 138m) and a glacial lake. We will cross the Dhudkoshi River just before our Tea House; in fact the source of this river is just 1KM from this place. You can see the wall of Khumbu glacier from this place. Overnight in a Tea House/Mountain Lodge.
Today we will start our trekking towards Lobuche which is situated beside the Khumbu glacier. Initial part of the trek will be tough as we will hike to Dughla Pass/ Thukla Pass. It is a short and steep hike from Dhughla/Thukla. The pass is full of mountaineers’ memorials. You can find many famous mountaineers memorials who lost their lives in different expeditions. We usually spend some time at the pass and then proceed to Lobuche. Dhugla / Thukla Pass to Lobuche trail is almost flat. Overnight in a Tea House/Mountain Lodge.
This will be a completely glacier route. The trek to Gorakshep (5170m) and Everest Base Camp (5364m) is likely to be a moderate trek.
You can see Everest on the way but you can’t get a full view from Base camp, the Kumbhu icefall will be very clearly visible. This part of the trek will surely feel like you are in heaven amidst the glaciers and see the gigantic mountain up-close.
We will get to see the peak of the Everest very clearly tomorrow from Kala Patthar.
Overnight stay in Gorakshep.
The total trekking time will be 5 -7 hours and will be moderate.
The hike to Kala Patthar will be the most difficult part of this trekking expedition of yours as well as the most rewarding one.
You will be able to see the Peak of Everest. In fact Kala Patthar is the only place which will give you views of almost the entire high peak mountains of the Himalayan Ranges.
It will take about 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Kala Patthar from Gorakshep.
After Kala Patthar it will be all descending from now on and the trek becomes very simple, though you have to be careful about the decline.
We will need another 3 hours to reach Lobuche (4940m). Total trek time will be 7 hours max with only one steep incline and rest simple and easy trek.
Based on group’s decision you can trek down to Pheriche also
Today’s trek will be a moderate trek till Namche Bazaar. We have a little hike before Tengboche and after Phungi Thanga.
Today is the last day of our trekking in Khumbu. The trek is of moderate difficulty level as we return to Lukla on the very same trail. The last hike to Lukla will appear endless as we will be in a hurry to reach Lukla, however the trail is not tough at all.
Today we will proceed to the Airport and catch our flight to Kathmandu and enjoy the valley views throughout the 35 minutes flying time.
This is a complete leisure day and overnight stay at hotel or guest house

So finally I decided to climb the base camp of the highest mountain in the world. The majestic mountain range had been in my bucket list for many years. Now seemed to be the right time, and so I set off in search of the "Everest". I always thought how difficult could it be to climb mountains, after all, it just takes putting one step ahead of the other. I was wrong, it indeed turned out to be more difficult than I imagined. This is due to the rarefied air in the atmosphere, that makes breathing difficult. Even a nominal gradient while ascending seems to be a task. But thankfully I wasn't hit by any symptoms of AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ) which makes the mountaineer's job tremendously difficult at high altitudes. On the trek, it was the promise of some awesome photos, that helped me carry through many steep climbs. But, the sheer beauty of the barren mountains with clear blue sky in the backdrop and the ferocious Dudh Koshi River inspired me not to give up but to keep climbing. During the climb of Kala Patthar, I learnt the importance of balance and concentration, even when you are exhausted beyond limit. On the Kala Patthar summit day, I set out at 4 in the morning, climbing through the mountain with a 50-70 degree gradient; sub zero temperatures, chilly winds and freezing weather. It was total dark and the only thing I could see through my head torch was the next step. From this moment till 6 am in the morning, I only thought about the awesome feeling of summiting and achieving my goal. As the air was thin, I concentrated on breathing properly and adequately and took synchronized baby steps. And, finally at 6:30 am I reached the Summit (5643m)! The view of the sunrise on Everest was just spectacular and the feeling of having summited, exhilarating!! The Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar expedition made me realize that to achieve a goal, it is important to believe in your own efforts and strength (Both Physical and Mental).But more than that, we should be grateful towards the ecosystem around and factors beyond our control which play an equally important role in our journey to achieve anything.

Going through the various options from Chadar, Sandakphu, Roopkund, Hampta Pass, etc. I finally narrowed down to the Everest Base Camp. The very thought of following the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay thrilled me to the core. The sight of having a close encounter with the highest point on earth just pushed further my excitement levels. After a series of e-searches and consulting with other fellow trekkers, I finally made up my mind to enroll for the 14 day EBC Trek with Thrillophilia. The EBC Trek was by far my best trek so far. Though the thin air made the ascent difficult and more challenging, I am glad that I was able to complete the trek. The amazing view of snow clad mountains, the vast greenery and above all the company of similar fun-loving folks made the trek a memorable one. Kudos to the team at Thrillophilia. The trek was not only organized well but the pricing was also reasonable. All the questions, concerns, doubts and apprehensions I that had were properly attended by the travel consultant at Thrillophilia, Miss Madhuri Mathur despite some of them being repetitive. The representatives Mr. Subid Sahoo and Mr. Nitish Singh as well as the trek Guide Mr. Bijay along with his assistants were all friendly and helpful. The great Everest Base trek camp is the most spectacular camping that I ever know of. What I liked personally about this trek was the courtesy and reception of the inhabitants at this place. Even though the trek was steep and sharp we had ample route to trek and enjoy. We even had time to take marvellous pictures at each and every step of the trek. I should say that I went on this trek at the right time. it was a life changing experience for me!!

Are you planning to head for a trek to the Everest Base camp? Well hear my story of my experience to this wonderful heaven on Earth, I am basically from Rajasthan, and am a great lover of trek, I never leave any trekking place in the World untouched, there are many I have taken up and there are still vast to explore, as I was trekking to each and every place that I had shortlisted from my bucket list, the Everest base camp took its turn last month, I was very eagerly waiting for this trek ever since I had heard from the Indian friends about a trekking destination like this in Nepal. The Everest memory is going to be in memories forever; base camp at the world’s highest mountain is not everyone’s cup of tea. It needs endurance, agility, talent and stability to survive the whole way through, which is what I have learnt from the trek. When the temperature in Rajasthan was touching around 40 degree, I decided to trek to the Everest to take a break from the climate and the city. I read about the reviews before hand and planned everything, initially I thought of going alone, but at the last moment some old school friends of mine joined up, so it was a team of ten heading to the highest peak of the world. Our journey began at Rajasthan, and within few hours we reached Kathmandu, from where we were supposed to be picked up by our guides, we moved on from here to a nearby hotel, as we wanted to fresh up and make ourselves active before the actual trek began, so our first day was a complete rest at the hotel, the next day we went down to explore the Kathmandu valleys and monkey temple, and then by evening we were boarded flight to Lukla, and here finally our trekking activity started, caught a glimpse of this statue on way – Late Pasang Lhamu Sherpa ( the first Nepali women to reach the world top), and then from here we reached to Phakding, here we halted for some time, took a short nap for a couple of hours, and on our guides call we started to trek towards gateway of Everest, Namche Bazaar. Uphill and downhill trek over here was simply amazing, then we had to stop at Jorsale for some legal paper work, which was taken care of well by our guide, crossing the alpine vegetation and suspension bridge we landed at Namche Bazaar, after halting here overnight we started our acclimatizing walk towards the Everest view hotel from where we caught view of various peaks, Kusum Kangaroo, Thamsekru, Amadablam and the gigantic Mt. Everest. Then we trekked to Tengboche, Dingboche, Nagarjuna hill and then towards Lobuche. From Lobuche the final lap of trek to Everest base camp began, after trekking for around three hours I finally made it up to the Everest Base camp. That feel being on top of this Everest was like being on top of the world. Yay! I was waiting for this moment since then to share it with my friends, relatives and other trekking enthusiasts.

Not all travel agents would be able to deliver such an amazing service, I am really grateful to my travel agency and to out trekking guide Mr. Thapa who helped us out from start till the end. When I and my girlfriend got an annual break, we wanted to do something that was always in our bucket-list, a challenging and difficult trek to the Himalayas, and then when we read about the reviews of Everest base camp, there wasn’t any looking back. Initially my GF was stigmatic seeing the height of this gigantic trek, but somehow I was able to convince her and then we packed off for their trek with a minimum of clothing and essentials. I had no problem at as my girl friend had put a check list of all the needed things and packed all these, so whenever we needed anything on the way, she would immediately take it without even searching for it (this is one great advantage to travel along with girls, they are more than perfect in all these things). Well then the endless journey of ours began and the next two weeks weren’t just life, it was a meaningful life. I heard that the lodges in the higher altitudes get closed during peak winter, but luckily we didn’t experience any kind of this situation at all, our organizers had planned everything in advance and we also took effort to call out personally and finalize things before we reached there. As we were trailing we could feel ourselves lost in the clouds and it was a great experience to see the beautiful shrubs and trees on all the sideways, again my GF stopped here and there to take selfies (this is bit annoying when you travel with girls, they stop then and there for selfies break), but then I had to acknowledge because the sceneries and the hills were so captivating that even though I am not a photo freak, I too posed for many pictures. Our accommodation was a great place, it was equipped with all the needed things like – room heater, blankets, warm water to bath and delicious food were served on time mainly. But then I had a very minor problem as some shops accepted only the Nepalese currency, so to be on safe side you can carry some extra local currency (in case you are a shop alcoholic), I heard that some guides are too dependent but our guide was too accommodative and unless and until we invited him for a cup of tea, he never used to barge into our privacy. I personally loved the trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche as the whole backdrop was serene, calm and I loved the Rhododendrons mainly. The top of the Namche Bazaar gave a breath taking view of the surroundings which is still waving in front of my eyes. Some treks have the power to change the way you look at life, and surely this trek was one of my kind.

12 days of bliss.. A calm and peaceful walk among the mountains far away from the bustle of daily grind. The deeper you think about it you will not go. It is a difficult task alright, but the itinerary helps you take it one day at a time. The trek was very well planned and the Nepal team which included 2 guides and 2 porters were enough for our group of 6. The guides were young and energetic and never imposed themseleves on us. Their briefings were short and crisp, so that you could expect what was coming up in the course of the day. The entire team functioned seamlessly and unlike the other teams around us all 6 of us made it up and back without any setbacks. Yes, as you go up the exhaustion kicks in, at the same time you also get tuned to the trek. The body feels capable of taking more and more and you find yourselves appreciating yourselves and the team better. Food and other facilities were always carefully organised. Hosts always had a smile on their face. Energy of your guides and porters were infectious, looking at them running up and down the most difficult slopes, gave us that push to go ahead. Wandering on some of the steepest slopes in the world, you take in the beauty and the harshness of the mountains at the same time. Careful guidance and your instincts keep you alert, thereby reducing the chances of any casualty. The most memorable were the evenings after the trek when the group would come together to play UNO. We looked forward to it and sometimes lost track of time. The warm dinner being served often broke the tempo of the game. It was also a signal that we need to have a good sleep before waking up and taking to the slopes yet again. Reaching the base camp, gives you a feeling of awe, one because you have made it, second because you see the crowd at the camp and realise that there are many whose determination has paid out. One also feels sad that the onward leg of the trek is now done. But, yes, since you have made it, you have earned the bragging rights for a lifetime. To summarize, about 6 to 7 hours of walking daily, you keep pushing yourself like you have never done before, environment is harsh, you eat hearty meals, sleep at 8 and get atleast 10 hours of sleep, no mobile coverage, you spend time with yourself, meet awesome people in your group and all along the way, Lungs open up to help you scale the height. Overall, mentally and physically, this is a must do for all spirited people. Age is no bar – happy climbing everyone.

Some days were too long trek for winter like from 0600am Kala Pathare to 600pm, partly in dark, but trail is so enchanting especially from Gorakshep to Pheriche in the Valley by setting sun turning AMA Dablam Golden was unforgettable! Only trek in world to offer you bed and mattress in tea house even at +5000M. You can order any cuisines for meal and also take hot shower, such is magic of economics where thousands of trekkers join trek every day but sadly very few from India. We met hundred who were on other side of 50, also dozen of European American families having 10, 12 years old children carrying their own backpack, truely amazing. We were group of six between 25-56 years old, myself senior most but each of us completely trek to and fro successfully!

Only some times in life, people will tend to realize, there is much more in life than just money, regular office work and family. It addressed my desire to walk on ice.. around lush green vegetation.. through the hilly terrain.. see the majestic beauty of Himalayan range.. experience the electric flow of Ganges. With Valley of flowers being the first tick mark, I decided Mighty Everest as the second choice. The footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay started ringing in my ears and gave me enough excitement and courage to begin the trek. The sight of having a close encounter with the peak point on the land just pushed further my excitement levels. a group of 11 people whom i met during the day 1 were the best ever in the entire 31 treks i had so far. The time we spent together in Namche, Ranechapp from where we took the flight due to congestion at Kathmandu, Dibouche where we had a super star gazing, dingboche and every place where we spent time together was truly magical. Never ever i felt it was a painful trek even though i couldn't complete the trek due to personal reasons and came back mid-way, it was truly magnificent though the thin air made the ascent difficult and more challenging. The amazing view of snow clad mountains, the vast greenery made the trek a memorable one. Words like well organized will not be sufficient but the pricing, guiding, care taken by the team was way better than previous treks. Guide Tenzing, and his assistants Bahadur and Padam are truly patient and enlighten us with the rituals, way of living there in Sagarmatha National Park Region, food, festivals, specials and every information we ought to konw. A trek will become memorable only when it is filled with adventure, challenge and fun in it, and all this is coupled in the Everest base camp trek. When I had suggested this trek to my family, they immediately said a big “NO” as this was the most challenging one and I had picked the winter months for trekking, but then I gathered guts to convince my parents and started to go ahead with my itinerary which I had already done many months before the trek was decided. Actually the trek is not as scary and rough as others presume it to be, if you are packed with necessary stuffs and if you have some skill and knowledge about this trek you are sure to go through it easily. Trekking to the base camp is actually a great fun to experience for real. I want this review to be useful to the readers, thus I am writing more of tips rather than my experience so that it would be useful for the other trekkers who are planning to go ahead with this trek. If you are planning to trek to this base camp, I feel it is always wise to carry some USD and Rupees as you hardly find any ATM’s over here, it is also great if you are able to arrange some Nepali currencies too in case you want to shop or buy something to eat. If you haven’t packed enough winter gear or trekking gear, buy them at Kathmandu itself and save some bucks, and as you climb the altitude will lower down your oxygen level, so carry plenty of chocolates and some treats for your mouth. When your energy level goes down, just munch in few chocolates and gets instant energy. And you can also carry some tea bags with you; hot water is available at many places, so you can just stop by to sip your tea instead of searching for a local tea stall. Well all this being said, my trek to Everest base camp was more than I wanted it to be, fun thrill, excitement, adventure, mystery and above all I made friendship with so many trekkers that in future I will not have to go alone to any place, this trekking friends group will be ready to hang out with me.
